What to Expect Floor Demolition Day: A Homeowner’s Guide for Floor Demo Day

Demo day is often the part of a remodel homeowners feel least prepared for. You've chosen your new flooring and scheduled your installer, but what should you expect floor demolition day when the demo crew shows up?

Here's a complete walkthrough of what happens before, during, and after a DustFree PNW dust-free floor removal job in your Central Oregon home.

The Day Before: What You Should Have Done

Clear the room completely. Remove all furniture from the demo area, including area rugs, potted plants, and any items stored on or near the floor. DustFree PNW's crew does not move furniture, so the room should be empty when we arrive.

Disconnect freestanding appliances. Refrigerators, dishwashers, and freestanding ranges in kitchen demo areas should be disconnected and moved to an adjacent space, while base cabinets and built-in appliances can remain in place.

Secure pets in a separate area of the home or off-site during active removal. With dust-free demo, this is primarily for the pets' comfort around equipment, not because of a dust hazard. If you know your subfloor type, concrete or plywood, let us know in advance.

Arrival and Setup

DustFree PNW operates Monday through Friday, 7:30 AM to 4:30 PM. Your crew will arrive at the agreed start time with all equipment loaded and ready to go.

On arrival, the crew lead will do a brief walkthrough of the demo area with you to confirm scope against the quote and check the subfloor and tile condition.

With dust-free demo, there's no containment setup. No plastic sheeting, no HVAC register covers, no tape around doorways. We assess, confirm scope, and begin work right away.

During the Job: What You'll Hear and See

Floor removal is loud. Expect consistent tool noise during the active removal phase, similar in volume to power tool use during any construction work in your home.

The sound profile of DustRam certified removal is the impact of tile being broken plus the constant hum of the HEPA filtration unit running continuously.

What you won't hear is the crew asking you to stay out of adjacent rooms for air quality reasons. What you won't see is a grey dust cloud forming at doorways. You can stay in the home, work in adjacent rooms, and use your kitchen normally throughout the job.

Thinset Phase and Completion

Final walkthrough between homeowner and DustFree PNW crew lead after demo day completion in Central Oregon

After tile removal is complete, thinset removal and grinding begins. This phase tends to be slightly quieter than tile breaking but requires consistent grinder operation, with the filtration system running throughout.

Depending on thinset depth and bond condition, this phase can take as long as or longer than the tile removal itself, which is normal and would have already been discussed in your quote.

When demo is complete, the crew sweeps the subfloor clean, does a final check for missed fragments, and walks through the finished space with you before leaving. Book your demo day →

After the Crew Leaves

Clean subfloor after DustFree PNW dust-free tile removal on demo day, ready for same-day flooring installation

With traditional demo, after-demo cleanup involves wiping surfaces throughout the affected area, cleaning HVAC vents, and often waiting 24 or more hours before installation can start.

With DustFree PNW, what you'll find when the crew leaves is a clean subfloor, a clean home, and a space that's already installation-ready. Your home will look like the demo happened, but it won't feel like it did.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need to be home on demo day?

Someone should be present at the start to confirm scope and provide access. Once work is underway, you don't need to remain in the home, though you're welcome to stay.

What if you find damage under the tile?

Subfloor damage, such as water damage, rot, or cracked concrete, occasionally appears once tile is removed. We stop work and contact you immediately before proceeding with anything outside the quoted scope.

Do you haul away the tile debris?

DustFree PNW removes tile and debris from the job site as part of the standard service. You won't be left with a pile of broken tile to dispose of yourself.

Can you match the timing with my flooring installer?

Yes. Give us your installer's scheduled arrival time, and we'll coordinate our completion target to allow a clean, same-day handoff between demo and installation.

Final Thoughts

Demo day doesn't have to be a mystery. Knowing what happens before, during, and after helps you plan your week and know exactly what to expect when the crew arrives.
